Cycling and Rural Mobility Conference

On Friday June 22nd Velo Village hosts a one-day Cycling and Rural Mobility conference at Art Spring. This is the first time such an event has ever been held. Click here to see the Conference Program.

Rural Cycling Focus

Inspired by the themes of community well-being, capacity and connectivity,  conference participants will discuss common challenges, exchange good practices, share community-based success stories and apply lessons learned.  Decision-makers, planners, advocates and citizens will be encouraged to view rural communities as  strategic meet-me points – first mile investments -  in the development  of  seamless rural/urban cycling networks.

Conference presentations will highlight activities that increase, improve or enhance rural cycling experiences and support links between community-based requirements and regional pedestrian and cycling master plans. Specifically, Velo Village participants will collaboratively engage the Salish Sea Statements on Cycling & Rural Mobility, a solutions road-map for interfacing city and rural cycling interests and investments. » Read more: Velo Village 2012 (Salt Spring Island)

Subaru Western Triathlon Series

The Subaru Western Triathlon Series is coming to Sooke on August 7, 2011 and we need volunteers!

For the fifth consecutive year, approximately 600 elite and recreational triathletes from around the world and from our own local community will gather to test their endurance, compete for prizes and medals and enjoy the magnificent natural setting that Sooke has to offer. Many of the athletes will be preparing for the famous Hawaii Ironman this fall and by becoming a volunteer you help the athletes to meet their goals. The volunteers are key players in making  the event a success – plus,  it is very inspiring! Many positions are available and volunteers will receive a great K-Swiss Technical race shirt, prizes and food & beverages! Pre-race training will be provided and a volunteer appreciation party will take place following the event. » Read more: Subaru Western Triathlon Series

Cobble Hill Mountain Cleasby Bike Park

One of the first projects underway is to create a partnership with SIMBS and the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) so that we can promote the South Cowichan Valley as a great destination for all aspects of mountain biking.
I am happy to report that progress is being made and that the CVRD will be making a bunch of improvements to the Cleasby Dirt Jump Park starting this month.

Harborview Garbage cleanup Saturday, September 25

Harborview Volunteer Garbage Cleanup… this coming Saturday, September 25.

Submitted to VIMB.

Meet in the Harbourview Road parking lot in Sooke at 9:00 AM. Bring a pack for garbage as we’ll be cleaning up the top of Manuel Quimper. There will also be a group hiking up to Sheilds Lake for more clean-up and a possible boat repair job.
Bring yourself, your bike, a friend, and work gloves and a garbage bag.
Remove garbage, glass etc.
All are welcome. There will be all sorts of user groups out there.
As much time as you can give. It’s ok to come for an hour or whatever.
This is a great opportunity to represent the MTB community, meet some of the other park users and give back a bit for all the users and the land owner. CRD are very grateful that we are doing this. Think of it as a ride that keeps giving.

Sooke Triathlon volunteers needed on bicycles

Hello all,
There is a need for some cyclists to help out with the Triathlon on Aug 8th in Sooke. I did it last year and it was fun. The need cyclists to ride in front of the lead runners for each race category. Anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour of riding.
If you can help out go to the website and fill out the form. In the comments section say that you will act as a lead cyclist for the runners, and just leave the drop down selections blank.
